Parrut brings measurable social commerce tools to publishers and online businesses. What is the name of your business and URL?

Parrut (yes, like the bird)

A brief synopsis of the website / application ?

You know your favorite ice cream? Imagine if it was really easy to tell your pals about it when you’re online using Facebook, Twitter, or email. Then imagine the company gives you and your friends a few bucks off the next time you buy (or some other reward) just because you shared it. Everybody wins.

We also give our clients (like the ice cream maker) a whole bunch of neat data around when, why, and how the sharing happens. The companies use all this to shape the way they market and even how to figure out which of their customers love talking about them the most.

A lot of companies want this feature on their website, but don’t have the time or people sitting around to develop it. That’s where we come in and provide the technology to make this really easy.

Why did you start this company?

First, while social marketing seems like yesterday’s news in the tech community, we realized that most companies (including some massive brands) are just now getting started. Some don’t know where to start. And nearly all of them are concerned that they won’t get a real ROI from it. So we wanted to deliver something that could easily be tracked and directly linked to increased sales and membership sign-ups. All of our products do that.

Second, we felt there was something really fundamentally telling about the daily deals explosion. When the tallies came in, it looked like most merchants weren’t making money, and most weren’t gaining long term customers. A multi-billion dollar industry was hatched overnight, by demand from the very same merchants that were – at least on average – losing money at it. We wanted to give merchants products that would get them this growth, but also delivered sustainable profitability.

Finally, we felt we could deliver an extremely lightweight, simple-to-implement, tool that also gave customers a bunch of insight around customer sharing patterns. We didn’t see a lot of products out there like this. So we built ours.

Was your company started on a shoestring budget or funded?

The shoestring program. But do have some insanely good advisors.

Who is your competition, and what do you do better?

There are some nice companies out there doing related things. These might include SocialTwist, Extole, Curebit, Sociable Labs, etc.

We really try to position ourselves around simplicity and ROI. If it’s easy to implement and solves a problem, people will use it. And that “easy to implement” part seems to have been an issue in this space; we spend a great deal of our time focusing on this.

In terms of ROI, it’s straightforward: our customers need to get a return from using us. If they don’t, we’re wasting everybody’s time. We’ve found that a lot of our customers hadn’t previously been able to track ROI through social marketing, and we’re excited to be able to provide that.

Why would a small business, entrepreneur, freelancer, etc use your product?

It’s simple to use, delivers real returns from social marketing, we’re responsive, and we’re a lot of fun to work with.

How could you effectively use these tools?

Currently, there are 2 ways. 1) set up on ongoing refer-a-friend program for your business (either on your website or via email outreach), and 2) launch social sweepstakes to drive sign-up growth if that’s a part of your business model. Offer a reward/incentive if you like (we think you should, your customers will love it). Then use our data to make sense of how much of your growth is coming through Facebook, Twitter, or email – we think our charts are
