Why did you start this company?

We started the company because as both sales professionals and learning executives we were frustrated with traditional e-learning tools that had not evolved with the Business 2.0 environment. Today’s employees expect business tools that enable them to do their job better, similar to the consumer mobile and web applications that make their personal lives easier. So we developed a mobile and web application that people would like and we would be proud to use.

When distributing content companies are competing for employee time and have to ask themselves is it easier for a person to find product specs by searching Google on their mobile device or use the company provided information. It was important for us to build an application based on HTML5 so any web enabled device could use easily access the application.

Additionally, it was important to make sure the learning is in context of their day to day activities, which means making learning content available on their mobile device. When we studied front line employees we found that they would rather consume small chunks of information on their mobile devices in between helping customers or when they are in-between larger tasks. They sent a strong message that they do not want log into a separate learning management system and sit in front of a computer to take their learning. The common message was “what I need to know, when I need to know it, how I choose to view it”.

How do you see your company in the next 2-5 years (more products or services?)
Saltbox Simplifies Employee Communication and Learning for Small and Medium Size Businesses.We are really excited to launch our Wax learning records store in the end of July which is based on the new Department of Defense specifications called Tin Can API. This will enable companies to track and record data for unrelated learning activities with beautiful analytics.

For instance, Tin Can statements generated from a content management system can be used to target other relevant content for an individual learning profile. Statements from questions asked of subject matter experts in the social business collaboration communities can be analyzed to target gaps in front line knowledge of products. Completed role model observation coaching checklist will automatically communicate mentoring completion and post to the correct learning profile.

In a nutshell this allows companies to move from justtrainingto dynamically participating in employee learning.

Was your company started on a shoestring budget or funded?
We voluntarily left our salaried corporate jobs and bootstrapped the funds to build something we believe in. We’re not building the most sexy mobile social big data app so we had to build a business that makes money (like real revenue on a recurring basis).

Who is your competition, and what do you do better?
There are very few companies in the SMB space that do what we do. Unlike traditional learning management systems which require an employee to seek out relevant information buried within structured learning modules (which employees don’t like to do), we allow social interactions with independent content like posting comments, asking questions and bookmarking, along with the ability for an employee to import their own content from RSS feeds and blogs. Of course we also have acknowledgements and quizzes so companies can assess employee readiness.

Why would a small business, entrepreneur, freelancer, etc use your product?
Small and medium size businesses use our product because it takes less than 5 minutes to set up, requires no software installation or IT support, and has simple monthly per user pricing. Most importantly though, employees use it because it is a support enablement tool that provides them with up to date information in a simple, easy to use mobile or desktop experience.

To keep it simple for businesses we charge $10 per user per month.
