The Art of Charm – How a Small Podcast Became a Big Business

The Art of Charm – How a Small Podcast Became a Big BusinessDating coaches are ubiquitous these days, but very few dating coaching companies have the success or recognition of The Art of Charm. But as far as businesses go, the Art of Charm emerged from remarkably humble beginnings. It all started with two guys, AJ and Jordan Harbinger, who had the idea of putting together a free podcast in their spare time. Using Apple GarageBand software and a low-quality internal computer microphone, AJ and Jordan began recording The Pickup Podcast at home in 2007.

The Pickup Podcast quickly developed a massive following on iTunes. AJ and Jordan interviewed some of the biggest dating experts, coaches and pickup artists in the world, including Neil Strauss, author of the New York Times bestseller The Game. But as the podcast continued to rise in popularity, more and more people people approached AJ and Jordan with requests for live coaching.

Thus, the Art of Charm was born. AJ and Jordan hooked up with another dating coach, John Dzubak, and together they formed the company with just a few credit cards, no startup capital, and very little combined business experience. But they did have one thing working in their favor: They understood why so many guys fail to meet and attract women, and they knew how to turn those lives around.

Since officially launching The Art of Charm in 2008, the coaches have conducted hundreds of sold-out boot camps and workshops, teaching their students everything from body language to confidence. For instance, if you attend an Art of Charm boot camp, you can expect to be briefed on important fundamentals like maintaining eye contact, smiling from the moment you enter a room, and improving your posture.

But these fundamentals are just the tip of the iceberg. The more advanced material includes learning how to poise your body language during different stages of interaction, how and when to use to touch for building a connection, and how to banter like a pro. The week-long program involves hours of classroom training, followed by real world experience, interacting with women in clubs, bars, malls and other locales.

As co-founder Jordan Harbinger puts it, “We’ve worked with men from all over the world, and from every imaginable background and skill level.”

Just this summer alone, students have flown in from as far as Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and even the Middle East. Most students stay at the Art of Charm headquarters throughout the entire week-long course.

So why are students so eager to travel far and wide for this service? According to Harbinger, “We help guys awaken the primal masculinity that modern society seems to have forgotten.” And if the company’s countless testimonials are any indication, their methodology seems to be making quite an impact.

In addition to the in-house boot camp, the company also offers an online program called The Art of Charm Academy, which contains a massive array of targeted videos, exercises and drills, designed to help guys become their best selves over a period of 6 months.

The Art of Charm is now headquartered in Los Angeles, California, right on Hollywood Boulevard, near Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Kodak Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their recent summer boot camps all sold out in a matter of days, and the company’s YouTube page is filled with testimonials from students who have been impacted by the program.

The business now has four head coaches who work full time, as well as junior and assistant coaches, many of whom completed the program themselves. The Art of Charm even employs women to help out in the classroom, interacting with the students for various exercises and then offering their female perspective. The course is intense, and students are taken miles away from their comfort zone, but most walk away with absolutely no regrets.

With boot camps in New York, Los Angeles, and other cities around the world, The Art of Charm has become a massive force to be reckoned with in the dating world. The company has more than 21,000 followers on Facebook, and their YouTube videos have received more than 117,000 views. As far as the future is concerned, the sky’s the limit. The guys are currently in talks to host a new podcast on Kevin Smith’s Smodcast Network, and new workshops are being scheduled every day.

So what’s the secret to their success. According to Jordan Harbinger, “We’ve done it all by adhering to this one simple philosophy: If you want to date the women of your dreams, then you need to become a better man…We firmly believe that you already have everything you need to get the lifestyle you’ve always wanted. We simply help you to uncover your best aspects and put them to work for you, so you can always put your best foot forward.”

All in all, The Art of Charm is a living testament to how small budget businesses can thrive in the 21st century. Using the powers of the Internet, with just a podcast and a few social networking profiles, The Art of Charm found legions of students without even trying. It was not the founders’ original intention to start a business, but the Internet gave them a voice, and the power of their message created a demand. Thus, an empire was born.
