What is your product or service?
As two busy moms, we invented the first 6-in-1, multi-purpose baby blanket and cover to help busy parents save time, money, space and always have a clean, germ-free and quiet area for their baby/toddler. The new trendy mom must-have baby product is called the Babee CoveeTM and its companion is Babee CoveeTM Budee, baby’s multi-use blanket. Our products are machine washable, durable, fashionable, affordable and combine numerous single use items into one.

Why did you start your company?
Our company began after identifying a problem as busy moms…we could not find any other baby product on the market to help us so we came up with a solution!

Two Moms and One Idea – New Trendy, Must Have Baby ProductAlma’s Story:
When my first child was born, I was similar to any first time mom, protective and rather neurotic about trying to do everything perfect with our precious baby girl. Part of that was always draping a blanket on top of the infant car seat. Though the blanket did what it was supposed to do, shield my baby from everything—weather and people, it always slipped off and it was rather difficult to pick up the car seat with the blanket covering the carrying handle. Despite my annoyance, I just lived with the inconvenience. Fast-forward 2 years later, I now had a baby boy. This time around, I couldn’t bare the frustration any longer. I searched for a ready-made solution with no luck. Not only did I want to solve my infant car seat blanket problem, but I was also tired of carrying a lot of baby gear such as a high chair cover, shopping cart cover, nursing cover and more. Over dinner one night with my now business partner, a-ha, the Babee Covee was born, at least the concept.

Two Moms and One Idea – New Trendy, Must Have Baby ProductRomeda’s Story:
Alma had me intrigued while she was describing a clever idea for a car seat cover. I started gathering fabrics and sewing the next day. The perfect solution in theory needed some additional brainstorming and fine-tuning adjustments. After a few scrapped prototypes, the concept turned into reality. We knew we had a coveted baby item when we would go on play-dates and have other mothers offer to buy the blanket right off of Alma’s newborn son. And soon, we discovered, our little invention could do 5 times more than just cover the infant car seat carrier.

The Babee CoveeTM Today:
What we now have is the tested, retested several times and then perfected Babee Covee. You couldn’t ask for anything more, really. Best yet, you can use your same Babee Covee to solve other problems, as it truly is a 6-in-1 multi-purpose luxury baby blanket. We’re ideal business partners—great friends and honest professionals. We think of each other as family. Our mantra is simple with the Babee Covee, “Don’t leave home without it.” You won’t believe how much simpler your life will be with this multipurpose all-in-one baby product.

How was it financed?
Personally financed between both business partners.
Date officially launched?

What is the best advice you never got?
No matter how many challenges there are and no matter how much you think you don’t know, don’t get discouraged and ask for help.

What almost killed your business in the start?
Realizing how much we don’t know. As start up Mompreneurs coming from completely different professional backgrounds, we had to learn the ins and outs of how to launch a baby product brand. Having a great idea is only half the battle; designing, planning, implementing, connecting, networking, marketing…there is so much involved. However, we realized early on that we actually yearn for the guidance, expertise and challenge this Mommy business has given us. So at the end of the day – no matter how stressful – our hard work is rewarding and gives us a great sense of pride and heartfelt passion.

What is the one thing that you did right?
Getting a business partner who complements my skillset and who above all, I consider as family. The Babee Covee is a very family-oriented brand and was invented because of problems we experienced as moms – problems that we could not find solutions to.

What was the biggest transition you had to make (i.e. new skill set, habits, abilities, focus)?
Wouldn’t say we’ve conquered this yet, but juggling personal family life with professional responsibilities of our budding Mommy business has been the biggest transition.

Who knew two moms who met at a toddler story time, would become best friends and subsequent business partners?

The art of multi-tasking is our biggest asset and talent. Our typical day involves playing chauffeur to our respective kids’ activities, being Mommy, answering emails, responding to phone calls and everything else to run a Mommy business. We are both definitely out of our comfort zones and doing things we knew nothing about (i.e. manufacturing process, managing budgets, writing, sales calls, advertising, marketing, etc.). It’s a constant balancing act.

Two Moms and One Idea – New Trendy, Must Have Baby ProductOur biggest transition and challenge to date is putting so much time into the Mommy business and not receiving a paycheck (yet!)…but the daily rewards, achievements, milestones and above all the happy parents who love our products are all so satisfying. It’s a high to receive an email from a customer touting the great things about our product, seeing a post from a customer via social media or simply receiving an order that we get to process. Right now, we are all about making people aware of our new baby product…naturally the paychecks will soon follow if we continue to follow our passion for helping make life easier for busy moms and dads. Our Mommy business is like a 3rd child that we want to nurture to make successful.

Are you currently in the black or red?
Red; on track to be black.

What type of marketing or advertising do you do?
Trade Shows
HARO (Help A Reporter Out)
Niche blogger product reviews
Word of mouth from our current customer base
Facebook
Reaching out to industry related media outlets (TV, Magazine, Newspaper, etc.)

What would make your business more “Successful”?
Getting the word out. Once moms, dads, and caretakers try our products, they instantly understand our mantra, “Don’t leave home without it!” There is clearly a need and with so many great benefits, once the word is out and people are aware of our solutions, success will follow. We are truly making life easier for busy parents and this is our main goal. By helping others first and foremost, we truly believe success will follow its natural course.

Would you want to be acquired by a bigger company, run it yourself or sell in a couple of years?
We want to continue to grow the company so that we are expanding both in revenue and product offerings. Because of our passion and drive to help other moms like us, we want to run the business ourselves and plan to hire employees as the company grows and becomes profitable.

What do you think your projected annual revenue will be?
500K

How long do you think it will take you to get to your projected annual revenue?

Approximately 2-4 years
