Why did you start your company?

Gen Y Hub Launches MultiMedia Platform for Millennials

Co-Founder: Britt Hysen

Gen Y Hub blossomed out of a passion for citizen journalism. As a journalist in Los Angeles, I began focusing my stories on the thriving underground art scene and wanted to share how young people were monetizing on what they loved to do. I was seeing so many wonderfully talented people in their 20s determined to help their community through free expression. Tons of creative outlets were popping up that offered an encouraging place to let these energies loose. I thought this was a great start to helping Gen Y find themselves, but to really harness the depth of the generation’s intellect there need to be more involvement – there need to be conversation.

I felt there was a disconnect in the media in regards what young people really had to say about current events, and that their solutions to problems weren’t being discussed. The mainstream media and older generations were speaking so low of this generation – calling us lazy or apathetic or simply lost, yet I was experiencing the exact opposite. I was seeing this generation take every opportunity that presented itself and turning it into something to marvel. This was something that needed to be shared with Millennials everywhere to empower their being, so I created Discover Your Voice, a talk show that introduced the young voices of today. It features interviews with artists, professionals, humanitarians, political activists, and celebrities. To make this movement grow even further, I needed to expand my efforts to include an all encompassing platform for Gen Y, and thus Gen Y Hub was born.

How was it financed?

Gen Y Hub is currently self-financed with addition small investments from family.

What free online or offline tools do you use?

Not many tools are free, especially since most are subscription based, but we do publish curated content from around the Web. I consider knowledge to be a very important element of our publication, and I like to comb important and pertinent articles, outside of our staff contributions, that would best resonate with our audience. Technically these articles are free tools if you give proper credit. We respect our curated authors and value their content. Nothing goes on our site that is not properly cited or sent back to the original publication.

Do you use Social Media tools like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn or ?

Gen Y Hub Launches MultiMedia Platform for MillennialsYes, social media marketing is an active tool for us. We encourage the community to engage in our conversations, and offer any interesting content or discussion points. We host a weekly Tweet Chat on trending current events within the week every Friday at 10am PT using #GenYHub. This chat is open to all ages and is designated for those who want to either learn about what happened in the week or share their opinions on such news. Our Facebook page is also very active with streaming content that is fun and interesting.

What is the best advice you never got?

The best advice that I never received was that entrepreneurship will be overwhelming, so learn to take breaks or you will go insane. Don’t feel so pressured to get there quickly, the end result will manifest over a lifetime. If your business is your passion, you have to learn to manage your life around your work schedule. Entrepreneurship, especially during it’s start-up phase, is a 24/7 job. Don’t expect to clock in and out, or have a normal schedule. You are the boss. You never stop, but don’t beat yourself up. Everything works out at just the right speed and time if you learn to flow with it.

What is the one thing that you did right?

In order to do anything right you have to be proactive. I am constantly telling myself, “Keep going!”

To anyone who has an idea, breaking it down into goals and then break those goals into tasks. When you take the time to prioritize these tasks, you will have a concrete map as to how to get there. This is especially important in getting something off the ground. Write a list of your priorities, and make sure you check it everyday. This gives a redefined meaning of getting your priorities straight. When you cross things off, you will feel good about what you’ve accomplished.

Better yet, writing a list of everything you’ve done seems much more impressive to your self-esteem, and when you look back at how much you’ve actually achieved, you’ll feel motivated to keep growing that list. For me, it reassures that my actions are on the right course and that I’m doing everything possible to move my company forward.

Would you want to be acquired by a bigger company, run it yourself or sell in a couple of years?

I am looking to own my business indefinitely. I would love to partner with larger businesses, but as a creator, it is very important to retain the rights to anything I produce. There will come a time when I am going to need to allocate the duties of my current position so that I am able to focus my energies on other aspects of Gen Y Hub, and at that time, I hope to have the most resourceful and competent team working together. This is a community that helps each other thrive. I feel that if I handed the reins over to someone who looked at this simply as a money machine, the true essence of love and honor that emanates from the site would be lost.

What do you think your projected annual revenue will be.

We are a social media platform the likes of Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn combined, except much more involved and proactively geared to truly helping this generation become a strong unit. Our annual revenue has the potential to be extremely large, so it’s hard to cap a number around it.
