A brief synopsis of the website / application ?

DonorCommunity offers an all-in-one suite of cloud computing applications that address all of the capabilities nonprofits need to raise funds and cultivate relationships with partners, stakeholder, donors and the community. The DonorCommunity platform is extremely easy to use and includes applications for constituent relationship management, email marketing, online auctions, online donation processing, event management, personal fundraising, social networking, and website content management . Everything is completely integrated and delivered via the Web, so there’s no need to buy, install or manage software. Our affordable annual subscription includes unlimited users, unlimited training and support, unlimited constituent records and free Website hosting.

Why did you start this company?

DonorCommunityAs an entrepreneur and father, I believe deeply in the importance of community service. Over the years, my family and I have supported a number of local nonprofits both financially and by volunteering our time. I was amazed to see how much they accomplish with few if any of the business applications that for-profit companies take for granted. I saw an opportunity to combine my experience in launching software companies with my desire to help nonprofits pursue their mission and goals more successfully and efficiently than ever before. This was my inspiration for launching DonorCommunity.

Who is your competition and what do you do better?

Large nonprofits have traditionally been served by companies like Blackbaud that offer a very comprehensive but extremely complex and expensive collection of client/server software applications. This requires a significant and ongoing investment in computers and IT staff that mid-sized and smaller nonprofits simply can’t afford. Many firms have sprung up in the past few years to provide one or two capabilities that nonprofits need, such as email marketing or a constituent relationship management application. But, none of them is offering anything as comprehensive or complete as DonorCommunity at such an affordable price. Cloud computing makes it possible for us to provide the tens of thousands of nonprofits that were previously left out in the cold with a software solution that is perfectly attuned to their needs. We’re unique in the marketplace.

Do you offer free online or offline tools?

All of our applications are designed to work together and share a common database. So, every interaction with a stakeholder, whether it’s part of a fundraising campaign or a communiqu about a new program is recorded and tracked centrally. We do not charge for the new features and applications we add to our platform. These are included free to all of our subscribers. For example, we recently launched a personal fundraising application that empowers supporters to raise funds virally by contacting their friends and associates. Some software companies build a business on providing this one capability alone. We provide it free to all of our subscribers.

Are there different pricing levels?

We recognize that some nonprofits, especially the newest ones, are simply too small and underfunded to pay our standard annual subscription fee. So, we came up with an alternative that makes part of our fee contingent on the fundraising results that the nonprofit achieves with us. Nonprofits with $1M or less in annual revenue can get a substantial up-front discount and then remit 2% of the funds they raise with us during their subscription year. You could call it a risk sharing arrangement except there’s really no risk involved. We know for certain they’re going to raise much more money than they ever did before and that we’ll quickly recoup our upfront discount. But, the real win for us is the chance to establish a long-term relationship that’s based on shared success.

How long have you been in business?

I began developing the DonorCommunity concept and assembling the executive team in 2009. It took another two years or so to analyze the market, write our business plan and develop the first set of applications. We formally launched the company in late 2010. Since then, we’ve won a lot of prestigious accounts and generated market excitement at every nonprofit trade show we attend. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished as a company and the rapid growth we’ve achieved. These are exciting times at DonorCommunity.

Number of current users? Estimated yearly growth?

Our customer base has grown almost 100% in the last two months alone. We’re currently forecasting a compound annual growth rate of 400% this year, which we believe is extremely conservative given our unique position in the nonprofit marketplace.

How do you see your company in the next 2-5 years?

First and foremost, we intend to continue rolling out new features and capabilities to the DonorCommunity platform that will delight and inspire our nonprofit clients. We will also continue evolving as a company. For example, we started offering marketing and graphic design services about a year ago when clients started asking us to help them design Website banners and special event pages. Clients are also asking us for help with public relations, social network marketing, fundraising campaigns, donor analysis, etc. We’ve established partnerships with some top-notch consulting firms that collaborate with us to provide this expertise. Eventually, it might make sense for us to consider some mergers and acquisitions too.

What other web-based products would you recommend to entrepreneurs, business owners, or freelancers?

We like HootSuite, which makes it easy to update multiple social networking sites all at once. We also recommend Aviary, which offers an extensive collection of free image creation and photo editing tools and CrazyEgg, which provides an innovative way to analyze a website and optimize its design based on visitor mouse clicks and content choices.
