universal access to critical business knowledge, in a format that can be quickly and easily absorbed, allowing our customers to stay current and competitive and to become leaders who can make better decisions. Today, our solutions include a library of more than 8,000 business book summaries, used by more than 10 million subscribers, including 20 percent of the Fortune 500 companies.

  • What was the reason to start this company?

getAbstract is based upon the fundamental belief that business books and other sources offer an incredible amount of knowledge to help you build your businesses, and make better and more informed decisions. However, the specifics you want are hard to find and information overload makes data difficult to digest. This isn’t just a business issue – it starts on the academic level. The three founders of getAbstract, Rolf Dobelli (chairman), Thomas Bergen (CEO) and Patrick Brigger (CTO), were high school friends who always dreamed of working together. The inspiration behind getAbstract emerged during their time together at university. Like many students, they learned by writing their own summaries of academic texts – and other students often would borrow those summaries as study aids. After some years in the global business arena, Rolf noticed that many executives faced the same dilemma that had challenged his schoolmates: an ever-increasing amount of information and limited time to absorb it. And so the three men started getAbstract.

  • Can you access getAbstract via a BlackBerry, an iPhone, Android or Windows?

Yes. Anyone who is eager for on-the-go business knowledge can access getAbstract across all mobile platforms as well as all PCs and Macs.

  • Did the founders start the company on a shoestring budget, or did they receive funds?

Initially, the three founders didn’t receive any funds. One person was responsible for reading and summarizing books, another was responsible for obtaining permission to summarize the books and selling the service, and the third was responsible for managing the information and technology. Along the way, as the company grew, it gained support from private investors.

  • Who is your competition, and what do you do better?Compressed business knowledge – at the point of need and speed via Apps

We believe our competition is endless. The Internet is full of information. However, our unique core competency is to seek information that is relevant to our audience and to compress it expertly – and always with the permission of the original owner of the content – to create a credible, trustworthy summary. This compressed knowledge is then available on a robust technological platform that enables you to find, read and share relevant information quickly. Our platform allows users to learn about the main ideas and salient points of a book by reading a five-page summary in about 15 minutes or listening to an eight-minute audio.

  • Why would a small business, an entrepreneur, a freelancer or others use your service?

Nine out of 10 new business ventures fail, sometimes as a result of not referring to helpful sources of business knowledge in many common areas of concern – including innovation, leadership and functional areas like finance, marketing, sales, and so on. To increase the success of a company, business owners can access our abundant library of compressed knowledge on these topics and more at the point of need and at the speed of business.

  • How can people effectively use these tools?

Subscribers use our service by reading the abstracts that are relevant to their business. Subscribers can set up their preferences easily so that we automatically send them abstracts on their preferred topics. Using our search engine and our subscriber services, business people quickly receive information that equips them with relevant, compressed knowledge. This enables them to lead, adapt, change, and promote innovation to stay relevant and ahead of their competition. The high-level executives of the most successful companies focus on driving a strong learning culture, one that embraces continual improvement and innovation. getAbstract provides business leaders with a tool to procure ideas, build a fresh mind-set, make the right business decisions and strategically develop their businesses.
