Stepping out of the box and into the Talentbox

Stepping out of the box and into the TalentboxName of your company and URL?
The Talentboxblog, http://www.thetalentboxblog.com

Date started?
1/1/2012

What is your product or service?

The Talentboxblog is an online community connecting music makers and music lovers. We showcase the best unsigned R&B, POP and HIPHOP Artists on the net.

Stepping out of the box and into the TalentboxWhy did you start your company?

This showcase was created to give talented artists increased opportunity to promote themselves and give music lovers the chance to listen to a new crop of talented musicians. Living in Los Angeles, I have seen so many extremely talented artists that have the musical chops and all the talent in the world yet they don’t have a team to market it. They call it “show business” because you truly need to have the “show” and the “business” together. The idea is to get good music across the desk or in the faces of as many people as possible, thankfully the internet has exponentially opened the doors for artists everywhere to market themselves and take advantage of social media networking opportunities. The Talentboxblog.com is just that, an avenue for unsigned artists to get their music heard and increase exposure. I honestly believe in each and every one of those artists that we select in the showcase…wer’e getting more and more submissions weekly and pride ourselves in having only the best unsigned talent showcased. I personally am a huge fan of good music. Our first quarterly showcase contest is around the corner, March 1st. We have four quarterly contests annually and choose the finalist winner late December.

Main forms of marketing?

Our main forms of marketing is through all the social media avenues: facebook, twitter, etc. It’s been awesome how our community has grown within a month, it’s been nice to know that people are supporting new talent.

Do you use Social Media tools like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn or?

What is the best advice you never got?

You ideally shouldn’t begin a business because of money. I learned that the hard way back when I was in about 21. I’ve always been pretty entrepreneur-minded and this was back during the real estate boom when people were buying and flipping houses like they were hot-cakes. I knew quite a bit about real estate back then and I started a Rent-to-own company and began making cold-calls to property owners about having me sell their homes for them, needless to say, I failed miserably lol…I hated making cold-calls and “selling” people, it was so not for me and I was only doing it because I knew there was good money that could be made. After a few weeks of failing miserably, I quickly learned the lesson that I would never do anything solely based on dollars and cents. I truly believe that only following your passion will give you the motivation you need to keep going even when times got tough…and they always do. The phrase “follow your bliss”, means a lot to me.

Another important lesson learned is to always be yourself. The greatest asset you have is your individuality, the quirks, the things that make you different. Cindy Crawford was criticized for having a mole on her face as she was an up and coming model…the funny thing, is that her mole made her stand out from the crowd. We couldn’t imagine her without it…and it is the same with us as individuals. The things that make us different, the things you wished you could change in grade school or even the things that people made fun of you about as a child are all things that you can know use to your advantage…they make you uniquely you. The greatest artists of our time…all had many things in common, one of them was: they were true to themselves…and we felt it. Be you.

What almost killed your business in the start?

Before we launched, we were planning to have a showcase for every genre of music and I really believe that would have hurt the site quite a bit, especially as a new brand.

What is the one thing that you did right?

I think having a super specific niche has helped us grow. There is no confusion about what we do and who we do it for. Our site demographic is threefold: young, hip and social media saavy.

What was the biggest transition you had to make?

It wasn’t much of a transition for me. I am a huge fan of music personally and don’t really consider editing/blogging for the site real “work”. It’s something I would normally do anyways…search for music or find interesting videos online and post them to my facebook. This wasn’t a huge transition for me…that’s part of the reason why I wanted to start this venture.

Are you currently in the black or red?

We’re in the red at the moment. We don’t want to bombard our viewers with ads anytime soon…again, it’s not about the money, the main focus is to provide as great a marketing tool we can for unsigned artists to showcase their work to the world and for music lovers to enjoy our content

Would you want to be acquired by a bigger company, run it yourself or sell in a couple of years?

We’d like to run it for as many years as we can and increase the staff we have accordingly. This is fun to me, it’s not considered work…as long as we’re having a good time I see no reason to sell the company anytime soon. Their are so many plans we have to expand the community reach in the near future.

What do you think your projected annual revenue will be?

Nada, zip, zilch. As I said, we are not advertising anytime soon…we want the site navigation to be as smooth as possible for as long as we possibly can. When we simply have to, then we will begin selling advertising space…no time soon.

Stepping out of the box and into the Talentbox

How long do you think it will take you to get to your projected annual revenue?

Our showcase is not about the revenue, it’s about giving dope artists an opportunity to be heard and giving our growing community an opportunity have fresh music and blog content served to them consistently. If we continue to do that as efficiently as we can…the “projected annual revenue” will take care of itself.

What advice do you have for upcoming Artists?

Believe in yourself and embrace your individuality. You have a gift, work hard and be smart. There is no one like you…embrace your individuality and be the best you that you can be, unapologetically. #continue to create
