Can Hiring Interns Help You Grow Your Business and the Economy?Do you remember when you first started out in the professional world? Maybe you had a fancy degree or maybe you bi-passed college and decided you were going to jump right into making your own money and creating your own professional success.

Did you hit some roadblocks? Chances are you did, fancy degree or not. Were you told, “you need more experience? “ And then did you ask yourself, “how the heck am I going to get experience if no one will give me a job?”. The ultimate “rock and a hard place.”

So you somehow made your way and got experience any way you could. You might have explored an internship program, though they weren’t nearly as popular as they are today. Or possibly someone took you under their wing, mentored you and helped you become the success you are today.

Well today’s youth are facing an even tougher job market and need even more experience just to get a foot in the door. A staggering 20% of those aged 16-24 are currently unemployed and they are competing with people in their 30’s and 40’s who have lost their jobs and have a lot more experience.

The “double-edged” sword in business

Now let’s look at you, the business owner. How’s your business? Is your business growing? Have you been able to hire employees and do all the important things you’d planned to do to make a difference with your company? Unfortunately, most businesses in this economy are struggling to keep their doors open, much less grow.

Businesses today are caught in their own double-edged sword. Many businesses want to grow but in order to grow they need more human resources. However, many businesses can’t afford to hire any more help. So they are stuck in a quandary of do they never hire any human resources and never grow or do they throw caution to the wind, hire additional staff and hope like heck the new staff produces enough revenue to cover their salary. Sadly, and understandably, many business owners take the conservative route because they can’t afford to take the risk and never truly see their business grow – thus the “double-edged sword” in business.

“Two Under Two”

My husband and business partner and I found ourselves in a similar situation back in 2008 when, at the time we were running three different businesses in two different countries, we “unexpectedly” got pregnant with our second child and soon found ourselves the proud parents of “two under two;” that’s two children under the age of two.

To say that we both looked like “deer in headlights” each night at dinner is an understatement.

We knew we needed some more help but we didn’t have the cash to hire more contractors, employees or even offshore virtual assistants, we now had diapers to buy for “two under two!”

Justin, my husband, had always been intrigued with the idea of interns and actually found our first intern on Twitter! He ended up recruiting several interns from his alma mater, Penn State, and the rest as they say is history.

As we began to bring on more and more interns and mentor them we began to see our business grow and it freed up more time for us to be great parents and we even started a new business.

We launched Intern Profits in 2010 after many other business owners kept asking us how they too could start their own internship program. We created products and services to help other business owners find, hire and manage interns to grow their businesses while providing educational opportunities for tomorrow’s talent today.

A Match Made In Heaven

As we, and other businesses, began to mentor new workers entering the workforce we realized that we were creating a win-win scenario just by hiring an intern. Remember when I talked about the “double-edged” sword facing the new worker? Well now not only were we able to get more done with the help of interns but we were also able to provide on the job training and real world experience the intern so desperately needed. A true “match made in heaven.”

As we continue to show businesses how to hire interns and ultimately give back to society through mentoring new workers as they begin their own professional career journey we are living the life of a social entrepreneur.

Giving back by starting your own internship program

The great thing about having your own internship is that it allows you to give back.

As Napolean Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, famously said, “you give before you get.” When you hire interns you are providing opportunities for new workers to get real world experience and mentoring our future workforce. All the giving gives an incredibly amount back to both the intern and in turn our economy. We will have a better-prepared workforce and through the interns work with your company you will in turn be able to grow your company creating more jobs for more people.
