Why did you start your company?

While I was pregnant I did hundreds of hours of internet research on switching to natural products. It was so confusing! Products that claimed to be all natural still had synthetic sounding ingredients. Eventually I found out that since no organic standard existed for products that some companies were taking their products through the organic agriculture standard for certification. Seeing organic food grade certification on a product meant that every single ingredient in that product was literally acceptable as organic food. I was comfortable with the standards of organic food and now I could have a clear understanding of what that meant in terms of an organic skincare or bodycare product. No more questions, no more marketing hype – just a purely organic product.

After further research, I learned that the first organic products in the world to achieve organic food certification were produced by an Australian company called Miessence. I read about the founder, Narelle Chenery and her pioneering efforts to create these products even though she was told it was “impossible”. Her dedication to purity and to uphold the organic standard was very impressive. Since 2001, she has gone on to produce over 50 products to be certified organic. I went on to read through many raving customer reviews before placing an order. The ingredients are very high end (think organic helichrysum flower oil & tamanu nut oil), concentrated and fresh. Except for products with beeswax and a few of the essential oils, everything is cold pressed and essentially raw to protect the delicate properties of the ingredients. There isn’t anything else quite like the Miessence product line in existence. The products are really amazing.

After falling in love with the products, I researched what the Miessence business opportunity was about and how I could make money as a rep. I’ve never looked back and am so happy to be doing what I am doing.

How was it financed?

The business financed itself within a few months. As far as starting a business, it doesn’t get any more “low risk” than becoming an independent rep for Miessence. That was part of the appeal. We joked that if I couldn’t make my business profitable, then worst case scenario was that we would have some great organic products to use for our family which we would have bought anyway. The initial investment to become a Miessence rep and get a decent array of product samples is under $400. This includes your own Miessence website, training and on-going support. I immediately started talking to anyone who would listen, sent emails, had parties, attended expos and spread the word about true organic products and the benefits they offer. After a year and a half we were able to build our own website (Organic which allowed me to optimize myself for search engines, have a blog and a little personal spin on marketing the Miessence line and business opportunity.

What free online or offline tools do you use?

I use Google Analytics & Webmaster quite a bit. Since customers flow back and forth between Organic and my Miessence site it’s important that I watch traffic trends. I also have to make international calls to reps, prospective reps and the Miessence home office in Australia so I use Google Voice and Skype to keep costs down.

Do you use Social Media tools like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn ?

Having a business Facebook page is really important and I have been using my page from the beginning to build a fan base and brand awareness. My Facebook page feeds into my Twitter account which makes it easy. I never really got in the habit of Twitter on its own, but am really comfortable with Facebook. I’m waiting to see what Google+ has to offer a business, but I’m sure I’ll be using that as well!

How many people are currently working, including employees?

Me, myself and I run the day to day operations of Organic When things get a little hairy, my husband is recruited to help. A big part of my success is the team of reps I have trained and continue to support, just as I was trained and supported. Once a new rep goes through training, then they are off and running selling to their own customers and building their own teams. When reps build a successful team of their own, they then earn shares of the worldwide profit of Miessence on top of their own commissions and bonuses. It’s great because we all succeed together and is a very supportive community.

What is the best advice you never got?

Keep it simple. Sometimes I get so bogged down in the details that I could have taken ten steps forward by the time I take one. It doesn’t have to be rocket science and it doesn’t have to be perfect. You just need to connect with people looking for what you have to offer.

What almost killed your business in the start?

I think I overestimated what I would make in the first year and was getting a little frustrated. The good news is that I underestimated what I could make in three years and beyond. Any business is going to take time and effort prior to turning a profit. You must remain laser focused and keep your eyes on the prize. It’s also important to enjoy what you are doing as well. That will get you through the tough times.

What is the one thing that you did right?

Selecting my company name, domain and branding. I love Organic as much today as when it was conceived and I think it will stand the test of time. Even though an independent representative is part of a bigger picture or parent brand, it is still important that you find a way to brand yourself. You want to stand out from the rest and have an easy way for people to remember how to find you should they decide to look for you amongst other reps.

What was the biggest transition you had to make (i.e. new skill set, habits, abilities, focus)? Patience and to accept that I can only do so much. I have a ton of ideas, but not a lot of time. When I am feeling overwhelmed its usually because I have taken on too much. I’m a stay at home mom with two young children, which will always be my priority. I enjoy being an entrepreneur and the challenge of it all, so working is really a treat for me but at times it just has to take the back seat to life.

Are you currently in the black or red?

Black. For a company only a couple of years old, I’m pleased at where I am today and am excited for what is ahead. I made a sizable business investment in my own website Organic earlier this year, but that has only helped me grow.

What type of marketing or advertising do you do?

I do a lot of internet advertising on Facebook and through Google Adwords. I also have found that since Miessence is the world’s only certified organic network marketing company and they created the world’s first certified products has helped generate a buzz in the media. We are blazing trails in the U.S. since Miessence isn’t as recognized here as it is in Australia.

What would make your business more “Successful”?

The fastest way to grow my business is to connect with organic consumers who want the best products available and eco-preneurs who want to do what I have done and build their own business through the Miessence platform. I think media attention on the issues of human safety and synthetic chemical exposure is also going to contribute to growth. Every year it seems the awareness of potential health hazards and chemical body burden is growing. People are becoming more mindful of everything they use in their day to day life. I’m not holding my breath, but I can hope for some sort of government regulated industry standards on the terms “natural” and “organic”. Consumers are so confused by misleading marketing claims and rightfully so. You almost have to become a detective to define ingredients, manufacturing practices and company philosophy. I think that is another reason that Miessence has thrived on the network marketing platform. Reps are sharing really useful and important information with their friends and family and they in turn do the same. It’s essentially one huge word of mouth campaign.

An Organic Home Business To Green Your Bank Account & Our WorldWould you want to be acquired by a bigger company, run it yourself or sell in a couple of years?

No, I absolutely love working with Miessence and hope to be doing it for the rest of my life. I’m passionate about what all the reps are collectively accomplishing together and the positive impact organic farming practices, organic manufacturing, carbon negative shipping certification and the pending development of 100% biodegradable packaging will have on our planet. Miessence is constantly evolving and has been several steps ahead of everyone else for about ten years now. Maybe my children will get involved someday. It’s an extremely flexible business with the potential for sizable residual income when you need to take breaks. You can ramp things up or take a month off depending on your goals and the time you have available.
