Augmented Reality Helps Local Businesses

Augmented Reality Helps Local BusinessesWhat is the name of your business and URL?

BadgerSpot LLC

www.badgerspot.com

A brief synopsis of the website / application

The application allows users to point their smartphones at a picture and have 3D animations, video, 2D images, and sounds play for them as if they’re a part of the environment. Users can also create their own comment/content wall that is only accessible from their gps location via the app. Users with the app at that location can leave messages, view other’s messages, and view some really cool/unique 3D content.

Think of the app as a way to create “mini social networks” that are location specific.

Why did you start this company?

We felt like we had a very cool way to help people interact with each other and to help businesses interact with their customers.

Was your company started on a shoestring budget or funded?

We started with a shoestring budget. We developed and launched the app with no funding. Once the app was launched, we received a little bit of funding.

Who is your competition, and what do you do better?

Foursquare is probably our closest competition. I feel like we provide a more fun user experience AND a way for businesses to actively participate as well.

Why would a small business, entrepreneur, freelancer, etc use your product?

Small businesses, especially those with customers coming to them, can print out our free markers and create content/comment walls specific to their locations. This allows users to interact with them and create a sense of community within that location. It’s much easier to get someone to connect with you while you have them in your store than it is to get them to remember to “like” you on facebook once they leave.

How could you effectively use these tools?

Print the markers on menus, posters, table tents, etc.. People like playing with new technology and interacting with each other.

We also have special uses for printed publications. Newspapers, magazines, and comic books have their own “section” within our application. Using Paper Companion, they can layer video, images, and sound over the printed pages.

A short bio of your company:

We’re a small group of creatives/artists/programmers that have been working together for 10 years. We’re all good friends and get along great. Until creating BadgerSpot Paper Companion, we’ve mostly done 3D animations and interactive work for corporate clients. We love creating and building.

Do you offer free online or offline tools?

The BadgerSpot Paper Companion app is free for anyone to download and use. Our markers(the graphics that trigger the interactive content) are also free to download and print. Anyone can make a location based content wall for free.

Are there different pricing levels?

We are working on special accounts for businesses so that they are able to display videos, specials(mostly for restaurants), or advertising in their location(s). The pricing for this is to be determined, but we are confident we will be able to provide these premium accounts at a rate that’s affordable.

Do you have a blog that keeps users updated?

Not yet. It’s coming!

Augmented Reality Helps Local BusinessesHow long have you been in business?

April 1, 2011 is the day we officially became a business. Being April Fools Day was just an amusing coincidence. :) The app was launched about 6 weeks ago.

Number of current users? Estimated yearly growth?

Around 350 users. It’s a little too soon to tell. :) Our short term goal is 2k users by December.

How do you see your company in the next 2-5 years (more products or services?)

We have many plans for more features within the app, including some gaming aspects for users, ability to upload photos to specific locations, and more features for businesses. There are so many possibilities with this technology. We are also open to user input. If anyone has suggestions, we’d love to hear them!

How many employees do you currently have working with you and/or freelance contractors?

There are 4 of us on the team. We’re not currently working with any freelancers.

Are you looking to hire more people or contractors? If so, what positions and skills are you looking for?

Not just yet, but we’d love to be able to provide work for more people. When the time comes, probably another programmer and possibly another 3D artist.

What other web based products would you recommend to entrepreneurs, business owners, or freelancers?

Evernote(next to BadgerSpot) is my favorite application of all time. :)

Any Patents Pending?

Yes.
