Writing a book can be fun, thrilling, adventurous and of course, challenging. When Lisa Shultz and I first produced our anthology book, Speaking Your Truth, we quickly uncovered the hurdles and roadblocks to successfully producing a published work that we could be proud of. We knew we wanted to share what we learned, which lead us to creating our second book together, How to Bring Your Book to Life this Year: An Exploratory Guidebook on Writing and Self-Publishing. From that book, we created our company Self-Publishing Experts, LLC., to support aspiring authors who were embarking on the writing and self-publishing journey.

I think something that is really amazing about the industry that we are in, is that people are in a very exciting place in their life. I really believe that everyone has a book inside of them, it’s just a matter of when it wants to come out, and if you are willing to be committed to it, to see it come to life. Writers and aspiring authors are kind, generous, and supportive people. They get how hard it is to right. They understand the fear of sharing your work with the world, and they love to offer their help and insight. It’s one of the greatest joys about working with authors, they really are remarkable people all around. They are brave. They are courageous. They are willing to take a chance, and to put themselves out there – despite what negative voices they are hearing in their head.

What makes Self-Publishing Experts, LLC unique and different from other book shepherding or mentoring companies is that we are comprised of a team of four with varying skills, backgrounds, and expertise. When we come together we create a powerhouse of information and resources and make those available to the self-published author. We also use other independent contractors who are experts in their own area to fill in any gaps that a client may need.

The best advice we got when we self-published our first book was to be committed to the book for at least three years and to make marketing a priority. Sadly, many authors think a book will simply sell itself and therefore, don’t put the effort and energy into the sales and marketing aspect of it. That means your book will just sit on your shelf, which wasn’t the point in creating it in the first place.

The one thing we did right was to make our marketing and promotional push a joint effort. We asked for people to support us, we sought out power partners, and we had a collaborative push to make the book launch successful. For Speaking Your Truth, the day of our launch we reached #1 in Movers & Shakers, #3 in Self-Help and Motivation, and #79 overall on Amazon. It was a lot of fun, and it was great to see such success come from a collaborative effort.

We do a lot of marketing, PR, speaking and just about anything we can get our hands on that will help us reach more people, and share the possibility of self-publishing. With a team of four, it makes marketing easier, it’s not just one of us promoting and marketing, we have a group-energy that we all feed from. For speaking, we generally stay around topics related to creativity, writing, self-publishing and the power of personal stories. Currently, we mostly speak within our local community, but welcome opportunities to speak nationally and internationally as well.

We highly encourage all our authors to use a variety of social media, marketing, speaking and PR platforms to promote their books as well. However, the most important part about marketing, as we believe, is that you find the marketing tasks that you love and enjoy – and that you are good at. When you do marketing you enjoy, you’ll actually make the time to do the marketing. If you are doing things you hate, or that you dread, it’s unlikely that you’ll make time for it. The key to good marketing is simply consistency and persistence. We’d all love to be an overnight success, but behind every overnight success is ten years of hard work. And when I say hard work, I don’t mean physically exhausting or strenuous, I actually mean uncomfortable. You’ve got to get out of your comfort zone if you really want to make waves in your career – as a writer, an entrepreneur, or anything for that matter.

To get the word out and share information about writing and self-publishing, we use our blog at, and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.,, Social media has allowed us to share information with our audience easily and effectively, and the best part is that they get to interact with us as well and share any information they believe is relevant to their own networks. On our blog, we focus on writing topics, self-publishing information, marketing tips, and every Friday we have an author interview where others can learn from people who have been through the process already.

We love a video that we created, as it shows our group energy, and some of the books we’ve helped bring to life – you can see that video here httpv://

A few of my favorite books are around creativity. I think every aspiring writer should start with these: Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way, The Right to Write, and The Sound of Paper, Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones, Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird. Often the hardest part of writing book is simply getting started and making time to write. These books will increase your confidence, and help you see that every writer must start somewhere.

Having a book is an incredible accomplishment. It simply starts with the commitment to write. And it doesn’t have to take five years from start to finish. When you get support in the book creation process, we’ve seen clients able to quickly write, edit, and produce the book they’ve had inside of them for way too long.
