Social Entrepreneurship Is Family Business With

Teach your children well is more than just a song lyric, it’s a principal that the mother-daughter duo behind website Give to Get Jobs ( apply on a daily basis. Betsey Epstein and Stacy McCoy launched the job board featuring the latest openings in corporate social responsibility and social enterprise earlier this year. Armed with a strong desire to give back and impact the global job market, Betsey and Stacy prove that a mother-daughter bond can go beyond the walls of a home and into the world of social entrepreneurship.

Below is the Shoestring Venture’s interview with Stacy, which offers an informative approach to starting a social enterprise.

Tell us a little more about the launch of Give to Get Jobs.


Social Entrepreneurship Is Family Business With

Give To Get Jobs officially launched on May 2nd. It was born out of a deep desire to establish awareness around using business to “do good” and support jobs that give back both domestically and internationally. Job creation is imperative to long-term sustainable economic development.

What was the inspiration behind Give to Get Jobs?

I relocated to Los Angeles and was very excited to find my place in the non-profit and corporate worlds. And yet, in a city as big as Los Angeles, the job search was quite challenging, time consuming and depleting. I had a hard time finding social enterprise jobs. Across the country, my mother was undergoing a similar transition where she began to truly examine a job that she could apply with passion.

Collectively, we came to the conclusion that we could solve the problems of job seekers who were dedicated to making a difference while simultaneously building a business that could impact additional people on a much larger scale.

So, there is more meaning to the name than the job board component?

Yes. Job creation is imperative to long-term sustainable economic development. Give To Get Jobs is able to help stimulate job creation because we use a portion of the proceeds from each and every job posting to provide funding for job training and education programs via our non-profit partner, See Your Impact.

Can other people help you fulfill this? If so, how?

Our business model is to donate $25.00 from each job posting to See Your Impact. It’s as simple as that. We provide value for the job seeker because there are no costs to apply for jobs or to access our site. We provide value to employers because we provide complimentary postings for unpaid Internships. As an added benefit, we cost less than the traditional jobs sites as far as job postings go plus we have a very specialized, niche community who are passionate about corporate social responsibility jobs. So we need job postings. Spread the word. Companies, if you have opportunities in the for-profit sector, mainly sustainability jobs or other CSR jobs, we invite you to post those openings on Give to Get Jobs.

How many years and how many people has this person helped? How many people need help?

In the short period of time that we’ve been in business, we have been able to impact five people. ( But we have so many more people to impact. We can and we will impact tens of thousands of people over the next few years through this venture.

In starting a social enterprise, what is the one thing that you have done right?

One of things that I think we did right was sticking to our guns. There are people that said we had to make our site free and give up on our social mission for the time being. But that was something we just weren’t willing to compromise on. Yes, we are a for-profit business. But we are a social enterprise. Without our giving model, we are not the business we set out to build. Sticking to our guns on this issue was definitely the right decision and it has paid off.

As a startup company and family business, what has been your biggest transition?

The biggest transition we have had to make taking our relationship from a mother-daughter relationship to a business partner relationship. We are also bi-coastal. Communicating was the easy part. Before starting this venture, we talked every single day. Continuing that communication was easy. But learning how to communicate differently was a challenge. We had to learn how to balance our mother-daughter personal life with our CEO-COO business life. We’re still learning, but overall we’ve been able to adjust pretty well. My mom and I balance each other out in a lot of ways. I couldn’t imagine being in business with anyone else.

What book(s) have you read that others should read?

If you’re looking to get into social enterprise, “Work On Purpose” is a must read. It is not only an inspiring book but includes a worksheet that helps you figure out where your heart and head align. One book that I am determined to read this summer is “More Than Good Intentions: How a New Economics is Helping to Solve Global Poverty” by Dean Karlan and Jacob Appel. The runner up is “We First: How Brands and Consumers Use Social Media To Build A Better World by Simon Mainwaring.”

What can you tell other potential social entrepreneurs who are deciding to make a difference?

My advice to potential social entrepreneurs who are deciding to make a difference is to not lose sight of what you are trying to achieve. Yes, operating a sustainable business is important. Yes, making a profit is important. But, you cannot lose sight of the people you want to help with your venture. And you should never sacrifice your social mission for the sake of profit.
