ChelseaRainbow.com – I Design with Fashion in Mind.

My name is Jacqueline and I’m the owner of ChelseaRainbow (http://chelsearainbow.com). I live in New York City, one of the most vibrant urban cities of the world and also the capital of fashion. You may not be able to afford a designer dress, but you can always find my fashion forward jewelry to update your own looks and my elegant home decor accessories to enhance your home. I started my business in June of 2010.

Trend forward stones and beads with bold colors inspire me, and I’m always thrilled to discover a new or unusual color palette. I create jewelry and home decor accessories that are accessible to both casual crafts enthusiasts and serious collectors.

I design with fashion in mind. Want a hit of orange to bring you on trend? Check out my “Jewel Tones” section The bohemian look your thing? I have a host of gorgeous bangles and beads for you to update your look. Is neutral your thing? We’ve got you covered. Looking for a romantic feel? Look at my “Girly Chanel Style.” Whatever you need to update your look, you can find it here at ChelseaRainbow.

I have always loved jewelry and I love the relationship that women have with their jewelry. It makes us feel beautiful, feminine, and powerful. It affects us in many ways, and even if a piece does not cost thousands of dollars, it is still precious to us.

At ChelseaRainbow, you will find a wonderful world of handcrafted semi-precious stone jewelry, precious metal jewelry, and beaded necklaces, beaded earrings, beaded bracelets created for day into evening wear. My home decor accessories are designed for elegant home occasions. Also check out my knitting and crochet items for you crafty types.

Whether you are looking for a trinket or a serious investment, I started ChelseaRainbow to have an outlet for my creativity and my aim is to provide hand-crafted products that are well-made, lasting, and distinctive for the casual craft lover as well as serious collectors.

My company was financed through my savings and I continue to provide a monthly stipend from my income to purchase supplies and materials. I am dedicated to running my business without going into debt.

I use a number of free online tools for Chelsea Rainbow. I use Picnik, which is a photo editing program and I use it to clean up the work display so that all of the items are shown to their best advantage. I also use an online receipt manager called Concur.com. Concur takes information and receipts and puts the information into discreet categories such as advertising, art supplies, rent, etc. It removes the burden of having paper in my office or clogging up my computer. I also keep a record of my bank accounts on Outright.com.

I use Facebook, Twitter, Linked in, and I have a blog.

I watch YouTube videos for information on new methods of working on my jewelry. I also watch videos that are portfolios of jewelry so that I can keep up on trends.

At ChelseaRainbow I am the sole proprietor, but I occasionally use freelancers for things like logos, business cards and other graphic elements.

I read a book called The Purple Cow at one point an was interested to find out information about being ahead of the crowd. I found out that the goal of a marketer ought to be to make it so easy to be a salesperson, you’re merely an inviter. The new marketing is largely about this–creating a scenario where you don’t even need salespeople (Until you do).

Selling is a profession. It’s hard work. Ultimately, it’s rewarding, because the thing you’re selling delivers real value to the purchaser, and your job is to counsel them so they can get the benefit.

What almost killed your business in the start?

I started out designing and selling only jewelry, which made my company a one-note business. Because of that I started making home décor accessories to broaden my target market. I also now make knitting and crochet accessories as well, which have been well received.

The one thing I did right was to start a blog, http://chelsearainbows.blogspot.com. In this venue I write information about business, fashion and jewelry trends, SEO, and many other topics that other handcrafters find interesting. I can tell by the comments I’m getting that the blog is a positive influence on my business.

The biggest transition I had to make was to change the name of my business. My original shop name was JacquelineJewelry, which was too oriented to my selling jewelry. I started a new shop called ChelseaRainbow that has a broader product line including jewelry, home décor accessories, pens and knitting and crocheting accessories.

At the moment I am in the red, but I am hoping that by adding craft shows to my activities, that will have a positive influence in my cash flow.

I have always loved jewelry and I love the relationship that women have with their jewelry. It makes us feel beautiful, feminine, and powerful. It affects us in many ways, and even if a piece does not cost thousands of dollars, it is still precious to us.

It’s tempting to think about being acquired by a larger company, but I think that I’m more interested in remaining a one-woman band, perhaps with a single employee as an assistant if I get to be more successful.

Since I plan to run this business as a part time entity for the time being, my expectation is that I will be earning about $5000 per year from my business. I think it will take me about three years to get to that level.
