A book synopsis:

The central message behind What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know!™ is one of empowerment through infopreneuring. It comes from author Melanie Jordan’s core belief that “everyone knows something that is worth something to others.”

The book teaches its readers how to monetize their unique knowledge acquired from a profession, hobby or life experience, by creating original content information products and services on topics others would value learning. There’s a knowledge-based business inside of EVERYONE! And after reading this information-packed, as well as entertaining book, they’ll be ready to make money from what they uniquely know.

Why did you write this book?

Most people do not realize that their knowledge can truly be valuable to others—as I always like to say “everyone knows something that’s worth something to others.” And the message has never been more important with the fundamental changes in the workplace, and in small business, that have taken people’s livelihoods from them with no warning and through no fault of their own, and have left so many believing that their knowledge and skills have no value. And that’s pure nonsense! There’s a knowledge-based business inside of EVERYONE!

I put together this motivational, step-by-step how-to guide based on my own experiences, in creating and marketing information products and services, and the application of real business world techniques from my prior work in product management and new product development, to help others realize that their best possible entrepreneurial path is likely already within them.

I addressed three distinct audiences in What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know!™

  • Those who have always wanted to have their own business, and never quite found the answer. As well as those who through the current economy and fundamental changes in the workplace, have lost jobs and been forced into involuntary entrepreneurship, or want a “Plan B” because they fear they are next.
  • Those who are already in business, who are likely unaware that they have an incremental revenue stream from their hard won knowledge in running that enterprise, that can be easily added to their core line of business.
  • Content creators such as authors, bloggers, podcasters and coaches who regularly leave money on the table by not knowing how to fully monetize their unique content, in all the different ways that their audiences would like to learn from them.

Overall, it was about giving others a blueprint for sharing what they uniquely know with others, profiting from it as they deserved and not missing opportunities. By doing so, this creates the legitimate, flexible, not just “work at home” but “work anywhere” lifestyle that many dream of, but few know how to attain.

Do you have a blog, what is the link, what do you talk about in your blog?

I have a blog, What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know™ – The Blog For Original Content Infopreneurs at http://www.WhatYouKnowIsWorthMore.com and a podcast at http://www.WhatYouKnowIsWorthMorePodcast.com. They are used to share my tips, insights and my opinions on infopreneuring, entrepreneurship, marketing, new media and social media. On the blog, I also include announcements about media appearances and publications I’m featured in, as well as topical product recommendations and reviews.

Do you do your own marketing or PR? What is a good marketing / PR strategy for a budding author?

Absolutely! I have over 20 years of marketing experience from the corporate world (where I was a former VP of Marketing for one of the country’s largest banks) as well as from my own entrepreneurial pursuits and that of my clients. I am known for no-cost and low-cost marketing, and have been successfully marketing online for over a decade.

My advice to other aspiring authors is to avoid doing the traditional book marketing things everyone does, or thinks they should do (like book signings). While you don’t want to completely ignore the traditional media world, embracing the online world will really help. New media and social media are underutilized by most authors. By new media, I mean blogging, podcasting and video, but with a media purpose. And don’t overlook opportunities to leverage the new media efforts of others—every mention will be accompanies by an all-important linkback for traffic and SEO benefits.

Do you tweet, facebook fan page, myspace friend or use any other social media to get the word out?

I focus my social media efforts on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook (via 5 Facebook pages), in that priority. I am very careful to be very strategic and efficient in my use of social media so that it actually achieves my business purposes and is not just a big time suck. Most small businesses make the mistake of being way too sociable on social media and have no real sense of purpose in using it.

When used correctly, it’s a tremendous no-cost marketing method that can put even the smallest player on equal footing with the biggest companies in the world.

What is the one thing that you did right?

Just one J? I never stopped believing that I could make it on my own without a “day job.”

What was the biggest transition you had to make (i.e. new skill set, habits, abilities, focus)?

I had to learn to be more financially savvy and manage my cash flow, I had to get a handle on the emerging fields of social media and new media, and I had to wean myself from looking at the job classifieds when the going got tough and just stay the course.

In 50 words or less, write a paragraph stating why readers should buy your book and what they will get out of it after reading it.

What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know!™ is an empowering book that teaches how to monetize your unique knowledge acquired from a profession, hobby or life experience. There’s a knowledge-based business inside of EVERYONE! And after reading this information-packed book you’ll be ready to make money from what you uniquely know.
