Getting down on Twitter downtime

It’s like one of them birds in the Hitchcock movie . . .

For all you entrepreneurs, small business owners, and marketers using social networking to get your message out, you may have noticed that Twitter — that rich-person charity for the rest of us — really seems to be conked out much of the time. Most recently, we have people who have had their accounts fried when they tried to change their account information, leading Twitter to put out a warning to all users not to change their accounts until they’ve had a chance to look under the hood.

While we don’t have stats for this year, Twitter logged in 84 hours of downtime in 2008 giving it an uptime of around 99%, by far the worst of the 15 major social networking services. So it’s not just you who’s noticed that Twitter isn’t always in your corner when you need it. Maybe some of that $100 million that hit their bank account recently can go into managing data services a bit more rigorously.

To put this into perspective, here is Royal Pingdom’s graph from their study of social network downtime in 2008:

Think long and hard about Twitter’s downtime record as you ramp up your social network marketing.

Of course, don’t forget to catch Adolf Hitler’s reaction when he finds out Twitter is down yet again:
