Big opportunities in cocoa — and not the programming language

One great glaring fault of the mainstream business media and the business blogosphere is its knee-jerk focus on tech news. We’re so tuned to the tech world, that all this tech noise drowns out incredibly valuable start-up news and business success in transistor-challenged businesses. And in what is perhaps one of the most processor-free businesses on the planet, I have always extolled the opportunities in fine chocolates (yeah, that’s right). You can drown in all the hype about iPhone apps, Skype, or the latest social networking dumb idea, but who has charted the phenomenal course of Haute Vosges? Inspiring success story, superior product development, first-rate branding, and good, old-fashioned fabulous cataloging have made this as great a story as more than 90% of the dumb businesses profiled on TechCrunch.

Well, just in case your eyes have also been blinded by technology, here’s Time showing us how the chocolate business is not only recession-proof, it’s growing by leaps and bounds. (One of the reasons I’ve pushed fine chocolates is that the industry is recession-proof.) Money quote:

“Chocolate is one of the more recession-resilient food sectors,” says Dean Best, executive director of Just-Food, a U.K.-based news and information website for the global food industry. “With consumers eating out less and eating at home more, there is evidence that they are still allowing themselves the occasional indulgence — and chocolate is a relatively inexpensive indulgence.”

And we’re not just talking Kit-Kat bars here; we’re talking about the really pricey stuff.

And, besides which, when chocolate makers are forced to “eat” their excess inventory, well, there are worse things that could happen.
