Charles Dickens weighs in on Bernie Madoff

Yet another financial superstar withdraws in shame because she trusted Bernie Madoff with 2.1 billion dollars of clients’ money (2.1 billion!). Meanwhile, while Madoff is busy shipping his most valuable possessions to family members in order to keep as much of his ill-gotten wealth as possible, everyone and their dog is wondering how the guy can look at himself in the morning to shave. Or for that matter, what the heck this guy was thinking all these years. This question — “what is this guy thinking?” — has become a spectator sport on Fox cable news, including one psychiatrist who listed practically every diagnostic criteria in the DSM IV for antisocial personality disorder without actually naming it (he could lose his license if he did).

I’m going to give Charles Dickens the last word on trying to understand the mind of Bernie Madoff:

. . . for what could she know of the criminal intellect, which its own professed students perpetually misread, because they persist in trying to reconcile it with the average intellect of average men instead of identifying it as a horrible wonder apart. . .
