2009 will be the year of open-source

This was actually a sentence we put in our book but took it out for sounding, well, too much like a taped-glasses sort of thing to say. But Database Trends and Applications has released its list of earth-shattering events for the coming year, “Top 15 Information Management Trends for 2009, and slotting in at number nine is: “Economy Will Drive More Open Source”:

“On the whole, too few CIOs have made the switch to open source and SaaS-based sourcing strategies. This period of economic uncertainty should change all that,” said Doug Harr, CIO of Ingres Corp.“Bad economic times can be a perfect time to swap out old investments for new.”

But DBTA is all about big stomping companies and their wonder enterprise databases. We’re all about small business and solopreneurs. Which is why we say that 2009 will be the year of open-source. In a bad economy, dollar-for-dollar you just can’t beat “free.”
